Solar Shingles: Are these a Worthwhile Innovative Investment?

Advocates integrate solar panels on many homes and businesses as a general renewable energy product. However, have you ever encountered solar shingles? Whether you have or still haven’t, you were likely unaware of it.

They seem to be ordinary roof shingles from a distance. However, up close, it’s clear that they hold more promise. That said, solar shingles function to produce energy on various buildings’ roofs, both in rural and urban locations. Moreover, some versions can also transform electricity into heat.

What are Solar Shingles?

Solar shingles are a form of photovoltaic (PV) product that generates electricity directly from sunlight. They’re made for integrated building and are constructed from materials that automatically go through an electrical phase when exposed to sunlight.

Both solar panels and shingles, in particular, serve the same purpose. The most considerable distinction between them is the price. Solar panels have a single purpose: to produce electricity. On the other hand, solar shingles have a dual purpose which is to produce energy while still acting as shingles, making them less costly in the long run.

How it Works

Solar shingles can produce electricity from sunlight, thanks to a unique property they possess. Let’s look at the scientific theory and the ideas involved.

A photon is a charge-less unit of electric radiation: protons, which are positively charged, and electrons, which are negatively charged, are equal because it has no intrinsic charge. The photon in this example is a molecule of sunlight.

When a photon of light strikes a solar shingle, it is exposed to ordinary illumination, and the subsequent interaction shakes an electron off the light particles. If an electron is freed, it travels through a circuit until it encounters a location where electrons are stored.

This collection of electrons is then used to generate a current. The fundamental process for all solar energy is the same. It may be achieved in various ways, like using a solar panel, shingles, or something similar. These photovoltaic (PV) systems can power multiple devices, including calculators, homes, and other structures.

While solar panels can theoretically supply 100 percent of a building’s energy demand, this is dependent on several factors. These factors include the building’s electricity consumption, the amount of sunlight it gets, and other facets of the site, such as current power costs and whether there is enough space on the roof.

The roofing panels, or solar shingles, generally have a similar size as a traditional roofing shingle. In contrast, the solar panels are smooth, rigid panels that are several square feet in length.

The assembly, installation, and maintenance of these solar shingles turn out to be more labor-intensive. This is because additional shingles are necessary for each job instead of the number of panels used for the same type of assignment.

Builders go to great lengths to painstakingly place one shingle on top of another. Then, they specifically go through the task of connecting them inside the house. Since at least 2011, the sexiest brand in tech has been promoting solar shingles for large-scale implementation but as of last year has begun to implement them on a larger scale.

Based on the images we’ve seen, the Tesla Solar Roof promises efficiency, and from what we understand, V3 has lowered costs to the point that it may eventually work when opposed to conventional solar panels.

Even if they cost more to install than a standard roof + solar panel system, they maintain that their concrete panels are three times more robust than roofing tiles. That should mean that roofing costs for maintenance should end up being lower in the long run, relative to a normal roof that has to be replaced every 15 years or so.

There’s nothing inherently innovative about a new Tesla product; they’re always experimenting with new ideas and the future product can just get more affordable and useful as time goes by.
